Thoughts from Numbers Chapter 11


‘Now the people complained about their hardships in the hearing of the LORD … “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’

Numbers 11:1-20


Don’t heed the rabble who cajole and complain,
Who goad you to seek such selfish gain.
When God provides Manna, don’t look for meat—
Instead be grateful, your needs he will meet.

Don’t stand at your door and whine to your neighbour.
Do not be provoking your God to His anger.
Bear your burden with grace and good cheer.
Draw near to Him and He will draw near.

For all that we need, by God we’re equipped,
There’s no need to yearn for that old Egypt.
Mind how you wish; God hears your prayers,
An abundance of meat can become a real snare.

How powerful is the one who is content.
How satisfaction with what God has sent,
Will lead to a life of calmness and trust:
They’ll not be moved; but will hold fast.


“I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.”

Philippians 4:11-12


“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”

1 Timothy 6:6-8
